Deep Dive: Manufacturing And Finishing

A-Sure Trim products are the best in the industry because of the attention to detail built into the finger jointing and  finishing processes. These processes — created for A-Sure Trim S4S boards — give industry pros perfectly finished boards, patterns and molding that can be integrated seamlessly into any project.

Whether you need primed or unprimed S4S boards, A-Sure Trim’s boards are high-quality and can be trusted to last. Our manufacturing facility can create custom-size products in multiple thicknesses, lengths, widths and patterns.

Manufacturing

The manufacturing process involves:

  • Checking for Moisture: The moisture content of every rough board is measured before going to the planer line for sizing. High moisture content boards are rejected.
  • Checking for Defects: Boards are sized and then transferred to the optimized defecting line, where they are scanned by two x-ray heads and four cameras to read defects both inside and outside the wood. Two automated chop saws remove all defects, including knots, wane, splits and pith.
  • Finger Jointing: Blocks are conveyed to two state-of-the-art Weinig finger jointers. Blocks are finger-jointed together using Franklin exterior-grade glue (D4).
  • Edge Gluing: F/J blanks can either be further processed for edge gluing to manufacture boards of any width or go directly to the molding line for surfacing.
  • Surfacing: Weinig molders plane each finger-jointed board, resulting in a glass-like surface. Molding the boards eliminates any raised grain and makes the surface perfectly smooth and ideal for priming.
  • Priming: The raw, defect-free, finger-jointed boards receive two or three coats of machine-applied primer (exterior acrylic latex). Each board is buffered between coats of primer.
  • Packaging and Shipping: When the boards are finally finished, they are carefully packaged to simplify container loading and unloading. Package sizes are determined by individual customer requirements.

Loads of finished boards are shipped in 40-foot shipping containers. During the loading process, they are given a final quality check to ensure that only perfect boards are shipped to customers.

The Prefinishing or Priming Process

The process of priming the S4S boards is just as thorough as the manufacturing of the boards. This process has been carefully developed over 15 years and is continually updated as technology changes.

Boards are coated with 100% acrylic primer and undercoat using new-generation technology that improves the look and performance of the boards. The acrylic paint resists tannin and resin bleed. It also has better adhesion and flexibility.

All six sides of the boards are coated evenly so the boards have a uniform width, thickness and appearance. They also come with a 5-year warranty. MC Maderera boards are made to be durable, attractive and ready to use.

The pre-finishing or priming process of S4S boards is conducted in three steps:

  • Applying the First Coat: A machine applies primer to ensure the paint is perfectly applied and has a uniform thickness. After the first coat of primer is dry, it’s sanded to create a smooth base making the board ready for the  second coat.
  • Applying the Second Coat: Another coat of paint is applied by machine. Then, that coat is buffed to a glossy finish so that the board is ready to be used.
  • If a Third Coat is applied: The machine applies a final coat of paint which is then buffed a final time before packaging the product..

The boards are checked at every stage to make sure they are still smooth and perfectly sized.

The CM Maderera Difference

Machine finishing S4S boards is not unique to CM Maderera. What sets CM Maderera S4S boards apart from competitors overseas is the quality of machinery used and the levels of quality control built into the curing and finishing processes.

Using the best quality machinery and technology means that every board will be the same thickness and width without any offsets. You can trust that every board will fit perfectly and look great. That means less waste and less waste means better efficiency and no budget surprises.

Instead of just pushing boards through machines and loading them on trucks, workers visually inspect the boards as they are processed. Workers at CM Maderera check all the boards throughout curing and finishing to ensure they are finished correctly. Boards that don’t meet the highest standards are not shipped.

From rejecting lumber up front that has a high moisture content to taking the time to sand the boards between coats of primer, every worker on the team plays a role in making sure that only durable, high-quality S4S boards are available to consumers.

You can trust S4S boards and other products from CM Maderera to be the materials you need to complete a build quickly without sacrificing quality or aesthetics. Every board will be the same high quality no matter how large an order you place.
